UNC Rowing Selects Novice Squad

Tar Heel roster includes 33 rowers and coxswains.
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Following a week of tryouts, 33 student-athletes have been selected for the 2017-18 North Carolina novice rowing squad. UNC assistant coach Anthony Brock announced the roster this week.
"I am very excited about this group," Brock said. "We weren't expecting to take such a large number of walk-ons to join the team, but the potential for speed was so high. We get so many great athletes here at UNC – we just need to teach them to row and they will be pushing our recruits and varsity athletes by spring."
The pool of candidates started at about 100 students and was whittled down to a first cut of 45. After additional testing, Brock settled on the group of 33, which includes 16 who were recruited and signed with the team in the fall of 2016 or spring of 2017. The other 17 are walk-ons, some of whom are brand new to the sport.
"It was a long week of tryouts and these students not only survived but they impressed us with how quickly they picked up the mechanics of rowing," Brock said. "I'm looking forward to a great season."
